CATHOLIC CHARACTER NEWS
WELCOME
At assembly this week we welcomed six new students and their families. They were welcomed by our two ‘2018 Principals for the Day, Joshua F and Jake H.
The students have begun their schooling in Mrs Bridgman’s class. We know they will have a wonderful time here at St Joseph’s. Welcome to:

MUFTI DAY – PRINCIPAL FOR THE DAY
This Friday the “Principal for the Day” Joshua F, will be in the Principal’s chair. He told the students at school prayers that they are having a mufti day on Friday 24 November (this Friday). The mufti day is for the SPCA. The SPCA are very grateful to Joshua for supporting them and have sent through a list of ideas that your child bring to school on Friday. Thank you for your support of Joshua’s mufti day.
- Cat/kitten toys (plastic is best) and fabric tunnels
- Dog/puppy toys – tough rubber toys, such as Kongs are best
- Rabbit/Guinea pig enrichment items, such as fleece tunnels/tiles/hay racks/feed balls; and toys (hard plastic baby toys work perfectly)
- Interactive or slow feeders, and food bowls
- Litter trays and scratching posts
- Collars
- Old Towels – they have enough blankets at the moment
- Unopened pet food that we can give out to the community – particularly wet kitten and puppy food
- Donation
RECONCILIATION
At our last celebration of learning and the following Parish Sunday mass, a large number of our students were presented as candidates for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. These students, with the support of their parents are in the process of preparing for this special sacrament, which gives us the gif of forgiveness from God. Please keep these children in your prayers:

LEARNING LANDSCAPE
The plan for our learning landscape continues to be developed. The ideas we have received have been compiled, and there is a small group of parents currently looking at the ideas received on what can go under the COLA. Thank you again for all your ideas.
CULTURE CELEBRATIONS
ONEPOTO CULTURAL FESTIVAL
Congratulations to our Kapa Haka students for their outstanding performance at the Onepoto Festival last Friday. They performed on stage in the grounds of Onepoto School to a huge audience. Their Waiata had good volume to it and they could be heard clearly across the school grounds. Our thanks to the Rosmini students who supported them by performing alongside them. A big thank you to Whaea Sietu for leading our Kapa Haka students and for all the support she has provided them through the year. Congratulations to:

KEA CULTURAL DAY
The Kea Team had an amazing cultural day last week. The students came along dressed in the cultural dress of their family. They also brought along food that is special to their family. They all got to share about their culture and they had a wonderful shared lunch together. It was wonderful to see so many extended family members supporting the day. Thank you

The Football Tournament
We arrived at Takapuna Football Club excited for the competition. Energetically we warmed up taking shots, doing passing drills and warming up our body. We got called over for our team photo and then the game was about to begin.
Beep, the whistle blew and the games started. Both teams seemed to be doing well. The 5 / 6 team struggled with Takapuna taking multiple shot at the number one keeper Harrison. Over at the year 3 / 4 game Liam got the first goal of the game. The match ended 2 – 2. Whereas the 5/6 team had a disappointing loss at 2-0.
The year 3/4 team had an absolute blinder of a game giving a thrashing to Milford Primary School in a 7-2 win. The year 5/6 team was on top of their game as well unfortunately conceding the first goal. Luckily a few minutes later Cash shot from the corner of the pitch scoring in the top corner. 20 seconds remaining and we thought the game was ending in a draw when suddenly Joseph skilled past all of their players taking the shot with 10 seconds left, but no the keeper saved d it and there was an open goal for Nate. The team went wild as we went 2 – 1 up with 5 seconds remaining.
The Hauraki game taking a massive turn for the Year 5/6 team as they down are 1-0. Cash powers a corner shot but it’s a lucky save by the keeper, but then it was smashed in with a blinder of a shot by their defender. As an own goal this put them at 1-1 draw. The year 3/4 team taking Hauraki on. Smashing balls at the opposing keeper. Amazingly they manage to get an abundance of 5 goals. With Hauraki only getting in a measly 2.
Our Semi-Final was an intense game as we went 1-0 up. Suddenly we were even more dedicated to win and we went ahead winning 3-1. Sadly, they immediately came back and were drawing 3-3. The match ended that way and we went into a penalty shootout. We won the penalty shootout and progressed to the final. The year 3/4 team unfortunately lost their semi-final to Milford Primary School 2-1. They were then in the 3rd/4th play offs.
The final started and we were the team on top with Ryan scoring the first goal making it 1-0. The second half we were still on top and Jo made it 2-0. With an amazing meg shot. Unfortunately, they came back making it 2-1. 4 minutes left and it’s a corner for Takapuna. They cross it in and oh no handball by us it’s a penalty for Takapuna. They step up to take the shot and boom it’s 2-2. The penalty shootout started as the crowd gathered around to watch the intense battle. Unfortunately, they won the penalty shootout and were crowned champions. The year 3/4 team smashed their final out of the park. Honestly it couldn’t have been much better if Messi had been playing on their team. They absolutely crushed Hauraki with an amazing 9 goals to their 1.
It was a great day and we all had so much fun.
