About Us

St. Joseph's School is situated at 2 Taharoto Road, Takapuna, beside St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with vehicle access from Dominion Street.  It is an integrated Roman Catholic Primary School for girls and boys from New Entrants to Year 6, offering education with a Special Catholic Character.

The school commenced in 1894, with one classroom, to provide education for the children housed at St. Joseph's Orphanage. It was run by the Sisters of Mercy who have a continuing association with us. In 1930 the school was extended to cater for all children of the Takapuna Parish of the Catholic Diocese of Auckland. St. Joseph's School was integrated as a state school with special character on 16 February 1983. The proprietor of the school is the Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland.

The school buildings include an Administration Block, a Library, four blocks of classrooms, and a Multi-Purpose Block which includes a Hall.  Our school roll is approximately 380 pupils with a maximum roll of 385. The ethnic composition includes New Zealand European, NZ Maori, Polynesian, Filipino, Asian, Middle Eastern, South African and South American students.

The School Community includes the students, their parents and caregivers, the staff, our parish priests and the wider Catholic communities of Takapuna and Glenfield. It  includes the Sisters of Mercy of Auckland, who have historical links with St. Joseph's, and the Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland. The characteristics of the school community mirror those of the areas of Milford, Castor Bay, Forrest Hill, Takapuna, Belmont, Bayswater, Glenfield and Northcote from which the majority of its pupil are drawn. When our pupils graduate from St Joseph's, they usually enrol at Carmel College or Rosmini College, our neighbouring Catholic Secondary Schools.
