PLANNED INDUSTRIAL ACTION ON 29 May 2019

Dear Parents and Caregivers

As you may have heard, primary school teachers and principals plan to go on strike on Wednesday 29 May 2019. The NZEI (the primary teacher’s and principal’s union) has notified the St Joseph’s Board of Trustees that the principal and teachers at our school will be taking strike action over pay and conditions for the full school day on Wednesday 29 May.

As a result, the Board has had to evaluate if the school can remain open and comply with health and safety regulations using non-union staff. We have looked at all options for finding alternative teaching and support staff and unfortunately insufficient numbers are available to either continue to keep the school open for instruction, or for supervision.

Therefore, St Joseph’s Takapuna will be closed for the day on Wednesday 29 May 2019.

It’s important that you make alternative arrangements for the care of your child/children on the day of the strike. We know this is inconvenient, and potentially will create real difficulties, for parents and students alike. However, student safety must take priority and is our primary concern in making this decision.

If you have any queries relating to this decision, please contact me at annac@sj.school.nz. Thank you for your understanding.

Yours sincerely,

Anna Casey

Chair – Board of Trustees
