Waterwise – Sailing

My heart was racing. This year the Year 6s had to teach the Year 5s. A real nerve racking experience if you ask me. Never mind writing but WATERWISE!? I was done for!

A few minutes later …

We had changed into our wetsuits ready to go. My group was assigned to the sand. The last ones on the boats. I can’t say I was estatic, but I wasn’t annoyed either. We played on the sand for about half an hour before we were called to sail.

SPLASH! Chloe and I were called to the motor boat. Speeding off, we took the places Ryan and Dylan in the yellow boat. Slowly we stepped inside the watery sail boat. Once we settled in Darron our instructor started to shout out instructions like “pull in the mainsheet! Middle! Forwards!”

BANG! The boom hit Chloe’s head. “Ouch” she stammered. But there is no time to worry …

Waterwise

It was a watertastic week for all our year 5s and 6s in Kakariki who went to Waterwise at Murrays Bay

The first thing Instructor Darren taught us was how to rig an optimist. After that we learnt how to sail an optimist using the mainsheet and the rudder.

We thought we should ask a year 5 about how they thought it went and if they liked the Waterwise program. Abigail Street said that her most enjoyable part was “sailing the optimist between the flags”. She also explained,“First you struggle when sailing but then you soon get the hang of it, after you have been out on the water for a while.”

Everyone showed courage. We all learnt to sail at sea and kayak on our own. This made us feel really proud of ourselves.

Thanks to all of the adults that were there as we couldn’t have experienced this without their help.

Mr Bridgman watched as we rigged our optimists.

Setting off to sail. The optimists were out at sea as others had taken them out before it was our turn.

We learnt to kayak and felt confident afterwards.  Go Jack!
