ST JOSEPH’S TEACHING & LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

The underlying philosophy to success

  • relationship between teacher and learner
  • ethos of learning to learn
  • providing scaffolds, stepping stones and a safe environment enabling learners to be independent and self-directedpencil & paper as tools learning with Mrs T how we learn Focusing focused learners figuring out devices as tools brains at work Science in Home group 1 with Codie and Keegan Science in home gp 1-Theos gp
  • PHILOSOPHY OF LEARNING

growth mindset

teachers cause learning to happen

learning is finding out what you don’t know

everything is hard before it’s easy

First Attempt In Learning (FAIL) approach to making mistakes

develop the skills for learning to learn

CREATE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT

give ideas a go

value each other’s ideas

celebrate failure

if people are fearful of failing they are less likely to try

taking responsible risks to extend the limits

TEACH EVERYONE TO TAKE OWNERSHIP

BED & OAR – BlameExcuseDenial or OwnershipAccountabilityResponsibility

reflect on behaviours and mistakes through questioning

victim vs victor

courage needed to take risks, try again, be honest

ENSURE EVERYONE KNOWS THE LEARNING PROCESS

what? why?  how?

take learners to the edge of their comfort zone and support them to step out

teach strategies

provide scaffolds

know what to do when unsure, stuck, confused and to understand that this difficult time is often when learning is about to occur

thinking dispositions – like rungs on a ladder to climb out of the “Pit”

learn to reflect and consider next steps

CELEBRATE THE LEARNING

not just the end result

learn to reflect on the process and how we can do better next time
