CATHOLIC CHARACTER NEWS

All Saints and All Souls Day

This week we have two significant days on our liturgical calendar. We have All Saints Day tomorrow and All Souls Day on Thursday. These days remind us that we are party of a faith and church that has always existed and is eternal, and that we need to pray for those who have gone before us.

The Feast of All Saints is the day on which we celebrate the lives of those who have given their lives to Christ, who have lived their lives for Our Lord, known and unknown. Those known, have been canonised by the Church. We prayer for them all, known and unknown.

On the Feast of All Souls, Pope Francis asks people to pray for the world’s forgotten dead, “those who no one remembers”, the “victims of war and violence; the many little ones’ of the world crushed by hunger and poverty” and “the anonymous who rest in common graves”. We prayer for all the souls of the dead, known and unknown.

Dear Lord, we prayer for our own loved ones, family, our relatives, and friends who have died. Many of them are not famous, their statutes are not in the church, but their pictures are in our homes and hearts. Their stories are alive in our families. We remember them with love. Amen

CELEBRATION OF LEARNING

Celebration Assembly

Students throughout the school year make wonderful personal achievements in all areas of their school day. Their peers and teachers are lucky enough to witness these achievements during the school day and you as their parents get to see these achievements at ‘Sharing the Learning’ and hear about them when they come home each day. Another way in which we now share some of the many successes of our students is through our Celebration of Learning Assembly. These are held twice a term and provide the students the opportunity to be acknowledged by the school community.

At the end of this year we will be having our final celebration, our School Mass, on Thursday 14 December beginning 9.15am. At this Mass we give thanks for the school year we have completed and acknowledge and farewell our year 6 students and staff who are leaving. We will also be presenting the Edmund’s Cup, to a Year 6 student, for Leadership and Special Character. It acknowledges the participation and contribution the child has made to the life of St Joseph’s in the fields of leadership, empathy for others and upholding the Special Catholic Character.

The Year 6 students have an additional celebration, the Year 6 Graduation Evening. This evening is an opportunity for students and parents of this year group to join together for a light supper and to share stories of the previous six years. This year we will also be handing out the three year 6 awards, sport, academic and art, at this celebration. This will be the final occasion at which these awards are to be presented.

As a school we have moved to acknowledging students for their successes and achievements as they occur through the year. Therefore, there will not be a prize giving at the end of this year. We look forward to seeing you all at the end of year Mass.

Athletics Day

We had an amazing athletics day, yesterday, at Takapuna Athletics field. It was for all our Year 3 – 6 students. They all participated in the various athletic day events with great gusto. It was great to see everyone give each activity a go. A huge thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time to help run the various stations. A big thank you to the teachers who have put in many hours preparing for the day, and to the students who were such great participants.

I look forward to handing out the Athletic Day certificates at the Celebration Assembly next Wednesday. It begins at 1.45pm in the hall.
