Principal Message

Dear Parents and Whanau

Our thanks to James, Le Bron, Lemi and Noel who, with their mothers, represented our school community at the Episcopal Ordination of Reverend Father Michael Gielen as Auxiliary Bishop of Auckland by the Most Reverend Patrick Dunn, DD Bishop of Auckland. The Mass was held at the Vodafone Centre in Manurewa on Saturday 7 March and there were about three thousand people in attendance. The boys were fine representatives of our school and looked very smart in their school uniforms. We thank their families for supporting and allowing them to attend this amazing Mass on behalf of our school community.

The following day saw eight of our teaching team participating in the Round the Bays 2020 event. The St Joseph’s Wanderers had a great morning, running and walking around the bays with two to three thousand other participants. We are hoping that the Shore to Shore, on Sunday 5 April, will be the beautiful day we experienced on Sunday. Have you registered your family for Shore to Shore. It is a great morning of fun for the family, walking and/or running along the shore line from Takapuna Grammar School to Milford Beach. When you register you click on St Joseph’s School Takapuna and this will see you supporting our school through us receiving sports equipment. Join in for a fun day and support your child’s school at the same time (www.harboursport.co.nz/shore-to-shore/)

A ‘Covid-19’ tab has been added under ‘News’ on our school website. All future Covid-19 messages from the Ministry of Education will be put on this tab. On the day an update is put onto the tab an email goes out to all families at 6 pm providing a link to the update. This is the same as what occurs for School Newsletters and Notices. As a State Integrated School we act in accordance with the Ministry of Education’s expectations and guidelines. When we receive a Covid-19 update it is posted on the website and parents receive an email at 6 pm accordingly. Please read these updates to ensure you are fully informed of the Ministry of Educations expectations and guidelines. You are welcome to check on the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health’s websites at any time. These are constantly being updated. Currently the Ministry of Education website states “COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) is now confirmed in New Zealand, but Ministry of Health advise the chance of a widespread outbreak is low.”

One of our 2020 School Charter goals is “Our students become self-directed learners through teaching and learning programmes that enable them to achieve their full potential – Further develop the delivery of the Mathematics programme”. This week we welcome Elizabeth Johnson, Mathematics Adviser from the University of Canterbury. Elizabeth will be supporting the teachers in developing their delivery of the Mathematics programme, throughout the year. She will also be working with the Leadership Team reviewing the Mathematics programme that we deliver, looking at ways in which we can enhance it, in accordance with the Ministry of Education and the New Zealand Curriculum expectations.

Next Monday 16 March the school will be closed to students. Teachers will be having a Ministry of Education mandated teacher only day. Schools are to have eight teacher only days over a two and a half year period. We are have three this year, two of which are aligned with Rosmini and Carmel Colleges. The first newsletter for the year, January 17, has the dates for the year, including the teacher only days. On Monday teachers will be visiting St Anne’s School Manurewa and Hobsonville Primary. The purpose of these visits is to view and learn about how they, the teachers, deliver their programmes of learning in their innovative learning environments.
