PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Mahal n magulang
Our prayers are with the Filipino community as they come to terms with the significant earthquake in their country. As a country, we remember the Christchurch earthquakes in 2010 and 2011 and the impact it had on our community. We pray for those who died in the earthquake in the southern part of the Philippines. May they rest in peace with our Lord. We also pray for the survivors, that they receive the necessary support to enable them to move forward from such a devastating event.
Ngayon ay Araw ng Kalayaan ng Pilipinas. Pagbati sa ating Filipino community sa mapalad na okasyong ito. Masiyahan sa pagdiriwang kasama ang iyong pamilya at komunidad.
Congratulations to our children who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time on Wednesday evening. They have been preparing this Sacrament with the support of their parents and the Parish Catechists over the last couple of months. This is one of seven sacraments that people of the Catholic faith can receive. The children will now be preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation, which they receive in the final week of this term.
On Wednesday we welcomed the Catholic Character Review team at school prayers. Mrs Smith, Mrs Trainor and Mrs Casey really appreciated their welcome, as well as meeting with the various groups that represented our community. We thank them for taking the time to hear our story and we are sure Bishop Steve will enjoy reading their report.
Today the FIFA World Cup 2026 has begun. Next Tuesday we will have a Team Colours day, Details are below. This will also be a ‘Gold Coin’ fundraiser for the Philippines earthquake victims. The money raised will be sent to them through the Catholic organisation Caritas. Please send your child along with a gold coin. Thank you.

TEAM COLOURS
Tuesday next week (16th June) sees the NZ All Whites playing their first FIFA 2026 World Cup game. They are playing against Iran. To celebrate this first game for the All Whites, the children are welcome to come to school in their weekend wear, sporting the colours of their favorite world cup team. We look forward to seeing which teams are the children’ s favourites.

2026 REPORTING
Next week, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 8:15 am – 8:45 am, we have ‘Sharing the Learning’. This is the first of a three-part midyear reporting process. It is an opportunity for your child to share with you their learning over the first half of the year.
At the end of week nine, you will receive your child’s midyear progress report. You will receive this via the HERO App. There will not be a printed hardcopy version handed out. If you are yet to get onto the HERO app, please follow the instructions below.
The third part of the midyear reporting process is the whanau meeting. Parents are invited to meet the teacher on Thursday, the 2nd of June. Please make your booking through the HERO App. Bookings are open.
Last year the Government introduced a new curriculum delivery expectation. The expectation is that children must be taught the teaching statements at their year level. Children cannot be taught the teaching statements of the year ahead. They can be taught teaching statements for the years behind, but only after they have been exposed to the teaching statements at their year level.
This is a new way of teaching and is similar to how students are taught in Years 11 – 13, NCEA Levels 1 – 3.
The Government has introduced a new student report alongside the new curriculum. The report reflects your child’s learning at their year level and has the following components:
Religious Education
This is required by the NZ Catholic Bishops. It is a narrative that will reflect what your child has learnt through the NZ Religious Education programme so far this year and how they are reflecting the school’s Mercy Values and Motto.
Progress Descriptors
These are for Reading, Writing and Mathematics. They are five levels that the children’s progress are assessed against – Emerging, Developing, Consolidating, Proficient and Exceeding.
There are set strands in each of the three curriculums that teachers assess children against. The report then determines the overall Progress Descriptor based on the strand assessments.
Progress Graph
This is a visual representation of your child’s progress over time. As this is the first time it is used there will only be one marker. The second marker will be placed in the end-of-year report
Narrative
This reflects the progress descriptors. The narrative informs the next learning steps and how the child can be supported at home.
Assessment Results
If an Assessment has been used as part of the ‘Overall Teacher Judgement’ (OTJ) required for the progress descriptors, it will be recorded in this section of the report. The Assessment result does not solely determine the progress descriptor.
The child’s day-to-day school work, a range of assessment activities and the teachers observations, along with the formal Assessment, together determine the progress descriptor
Attendance Record
This is the percentage your child has attended to date for the 2026 school year. This information is taken from your child’s attendance information which is also contained on the HERO app, which you can access.
The most important part of the midyear reporting process is the whanau meeting. We do encourage you to book a time on your HERO App with your child’s teacher. They would appreciate sharing the learning progress and next steps for your child.

HERO APP
LAKE HOUSE
The Lake House carpark continues to be a construction site. We will therefore be unable to send children there at the end of the day for collection by parents. Please continue collecting your child as you have done over the last three weeks. We will inform you as soon as the Lake House carpark is suitable as a place for children to walk to and be collected by parents. Thank you.

PICK-UP

We have organised family pick-up sheets for your car dashboard. These will assist teachers in calling your child, wet or fine, when you pick them up at the end of the day. The family pick-up sheet will come home on Monday. Please keep it in the car that generally collects your child, and please place it on the dashboard when you are driving through the pick-up lane.
SCHOOL FEES
Last week families received their invoice/statements for their child’s school fees. As previously mentioned, the Bishop does not allow for the Attendance Dues to be paid in one bulk amount at the end of the school year. Please could you either set up regular payments for our school fees; or alternatively, you are welcome to pay them at the school office by eftpos. Thank you.
