Principal’s Message – 20 October, 2023

ST JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC
SCHOOL
TAKAPUNA

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Kia ora whanau

We are being informed that there are COVID-19 cases in our school this term. We ask that you please continue to follow good practices when it comes to your own health and the health of your whānau.

The health and wellbeing of our children, staff and community is a top priority so we are closely following the Ministry of Health advice for schools.

Symptoms of COVID-19:

  • A new or worsening cough.
  • Sneezing and runny nose.
  • A fever.
  • Temporary loss of smell or altered sense of taste.
  • Sore throat.
  • Shortness of breath.

Less common symptoms include diarrhea, headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, malaise, chest pain, abdominal pain, joint pain, or confusion/irritability.

For more information, go to the Unite Against COVID-19 website.

Please note the following if you or someone in your whānau tests positive for COVID-19:

  • If you or your child receive a positive test result, follow Public Health advice for COVID-19. They recommend you isolate for five days, even if you only have mild symptoms.
  • Household contacts should remain vigilant and test for five days, but are not required to self-isolate.

Returning to school after COVID-19:

  • Students who test positive for COVID-19 should isolate for five days, and shouldn’t come to school if they continue to feel unwell.
  • Many children will have long lasting runny nose and cough after viral infections. If it is over 10 days since the onset of the COVID-19 infection and they are no longer feeling unwell, they are unlikely to be transmitting any active COVID-19 infection and can return to school.
  • If they are continuing to feel unwell or their symptoms are worsening after 10 days then it is recommended you contact your GP.

WELCOME

A very warm welcome to Ajmal and his family who joined the St Joseph’s School community this week.

We sincerely hope you enjoy your time in Year 3 this year, Amjal.

REMINDER – LONG WEEKEND AHEAD

Just a friendly reminder that Labour Day is on Monday, October 23rd and the school will be closed. Classes resume on Tuesday the 24th. Enjoy your long weekend! 🙂

UPDATE ON SCHOOL APP

We have received the attached instructions for the @School Caregiver App, advising they have improved and streamlined the login process.

The improvements include:

  • Less steps for caregivers
  • No more double emails to parents
  • Auto login into the app
  • Ability to change your password

Please click on the link below to see step-by-step instructions.

A reminder that all absences are to be logged on the @School App. They can no longer be recorded on the school website and we ask you avoid ringing the school to report the absence. By using the App, both your child’s teacher and Mrs Kelly (who looks after absences in the office) will be alerted.

And please always remember to provide a specific reason for the absence (eg “headache”, “tummy bug”, “cold & cough”, etc… avoid a general reason such as “sick”).

Periodically caregivers will ring the school to report an absence, and when asked to do so on the App, they advise they don’t have it (or lost their log-in details). It’s very important you have the App as it’s one of our primary ways of communicating with caregivers, offering a variety of features and links.

If you need the log-in/password details resent to you, please don’t hesitate to let us know. Just contact Lizzy at secretary@sj.school.nz.

Thank you!

Updated School App Instructions – October 2023

RIPPA RUGBY

Rippa Rugby Year 3 Girls (Tournament)

We had two tournament days, one day we were totally drenched and it was hailing and one day was really hot. We got a few tries and a lot of rips. When we got a rip everyone was excited. We loved running around and having fun. The worst thing was the worms around our tent and we had to have bare feet! There was a tuck shop – I spent all my money on the tuck shop.

Rippa Rugby Year 3 and 4 Mixed (Tournament)

It was raining a lot and hailing, but we had our own tent. We were amazing, we had the fastest runners. We played together and got to play with our friends. I like Rippa because you can run with the ball and be more vicious, but you can’t pass forward. I liked running and getting a try.

Rippa Rugby Year 6 Boys (Tournament)

The games were fun, they were quite short on a short field (a third of a field), it was good to get moving. We didn’t lose a game and we definitely improved over the day, especially our team work. More communication. On our last game we did three up the middle and then spread it wide, like our coach said and it worked pretty well.

Rippa Year 6 Mixed (Tournament)

It’s fun but it would be better to play tackle. It is fun, competitive and non contact so it’s good for everyone. We went well, we only lost one and we scored some tries and got heaps of rips. The best thing was having a day off school and the food. We had a good team with our friends and definitely improved on getting rips over the day.
