PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents

Thank you very much for your support of today’s Daffodil Day. It was lovely to see all the children and their variety of ‘yellow accessories’ arriving this morning. Families have generously donated $343.00 to the Cancer Society. Thank you

A number of our children will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation from Bishop Steve on Thursday evening. This is one of three sacraments that you receive when you enter the Catholic faith. The Sacrament of Confirmation is confirmation of the child’s baptism. It is considered the strengthening of the child’s relationship with the Catholic faith through the gift of the Holy Spirit. As with all the seven Sacraments, it is a gift from God. Please keep our children in your prayers.

This week we had our school choir and school Jump Jam groups perform for the school. They were both outstanding. Our thanks to the staff who support these children before school and in lunch breaks with their practices. The Jump Jam groups will be performing at the North Shore competition on Saturday, 05 September. We wish them all the best with their performances.

This coming week we have our North Shore Catholic Schools Cultural Festival which is held annually at Rosmini College. This is a wonderful opportunity for our Kapa Haka group to perform to an audience of peers. As a school we are able to see their performances at our school Welcome prayers twice a term. We wish them all the best for the performance at the festival next week.

SOCIAL JUSTICE WEEK

KAKARIKI MARKET DAY HAPPENINGS – GUEST SPEAKERS

Natalie Allen’s Visit to Kakariki

On Tuesday 11th of August, Natalie Allen, who works for a marketing agency in Takapuna, came to visit Year 5 and 6. She helped us for Market Day by giving us ideas on how to develop our business plan, the design of our products and marketing. She spoke about the importance of the 4 P’s which are Product, Place, Price and then Packaging. There was also Profit and People but those four were the ones we learnt about.

One of the activities that we did was looking at the quantity of the product we needed. For example there were 6 customers but only 3 packages with chocolate inside, so there were 3 customers who did not get the product they came to buy. We also did an activity where we looked at products which were the same but had different prices, the more expensive products were the ones with the nicer packaging.

She also talked about Disney Ooshies and how supermarkets use big promotions for the customers and why the kids liked them. We learned about how promotions encourage people to want them. We discussed how squishy that you can buy in the $2 shop but it’s about $10 in Kmart. This is the same for Ooshies, which cost around $1 or $2 and there’s promotions in stores such as in Woolworth’s where you need to spend more than $30 to get just one free Ooshie.

We learnt so much from this visit!

Year 5-6 Guest Speaker: Myline from Sestema

This year the year six and five students have had the pleasure of experiencing guest speakers to help with our Market Day. Our last guest speaker was a lady who had children pass through the school. Last Market Day she presented her slides and the teachers loved her presentation so much, they asked her to present to the 2026 Market Day groups. And so we had the wonderful experience of Myline Dacanay. An employee of Sistema, the factory that makes lunch boxes, good quality water bottles and lots more!

When we sat down, a fun bubbly feeling swirled around as her warm friendly smiley and big bold slides behind her that got us all hooked in. Afterwards, she introduced herself and how she works for the Sistema factory. First she showed us the outside of the Sistema factory and left us flabbergasted as she told us that it is four times larger than Costco! Which left us dying to see the inside. It was incredible the tanks filled up with plastic that was somehow transported through large pipes that went all the way into the factory.

After she had shown us the factory, she explained to us that the factory used certain types of plastic. She passed around little bags of lots of different types of plastics, and that different plastics made different products and different textures. After countless bags were handed around, Myline showed us a video of some of the robots that worked there! There were robots that moved stuff around, molded and placed lids on drink bottles and food storage boxes and the crazy thing was they had names! And if you gave one of four robot names, you got an awesome Sistema drink bottle!

This experience left us inspired and super excited for Market Day!

Chelsea Herbert Speaks About Product Marketing & Advertising

On Tuesday Week 6, Miss McEwan’s cousin, Chelsea Herbert, came to talk to the year 5 & 6s about marketing and advertising. She works at Andrew Simms in product marketing and advertising. But she’s also a race car driver!

She had a fun presentation with some of the different TV ads she had made for different car brands like Denza and Maserati. We did some marketing challenges; we answered questions about our Market Day stall; advertised a tissue box, a pencil and a glue stick; and we created a company and tried to convince her why we should sponsor her.

I loved her presentation because she included us a lot and had a surprise for us all at the end. She brought a variety of prizes for us all, but had special prizes for one of the groups who impressed her the most with their company sponsorship idea. The lucky winners were William C, Miro, Josh B and Patrick C. They all won a keychain mystery box along with all of us getting either a foam finger, an expanding frisbee or a beach ball.

Overall, we loved her visit and we will use her advice during our Market Day. We hope Chelsea will come again!

TERM 4 TOUCH RUGBY REGISTRATIONS

Touch Rugby Registrations Open for Term 4!

We are excited to invite all students from Years 0 to 6 to sign up for Term 4 Touch Rugby!

Season Dates: Thursdays, 22 October – 10 December
Cost: $45 per player
Footwear: Moulded sprig boots (rugby, football, or touch) — no metal sprigs allowed.
Registration Deadline: Tuesday, 1 September

Important Note on Registration Deadlines: To ensure fairness and a smooth start to the season, registrations will strictly close on 1 September. Teams will be finalised after this date and capped at 10 players per team.

Late registrations create significant administrative challenges and team imbalances. Most importantly, players who attempt to register after the cutoff date risk missing out on playing entirely once the team lists are set. Please complete your registration to guarantee your child a spot on the field!

JUNKY MONKEYS

Junky Monkeys

On Tuesday at Junky Monkeys, my friends and I built a race car with a steering wheel, car breaks, a propeller, and a black box. Next we chose who we were. Luke was the mechanic, I was the driver and Jayden was the assistant driver. Then we played a game. Luke checked the tires. After that I got into the car and I raced.

First I made a jet ski. It went so, so, so fast because Serena was pulling it fast. Serena is my best friend. Then I made up a tennis game. We used an old tennis racket and a bouncy ball. After that I watched my cousin play. I felt the best I have ever felt before because it was SO fun!

On Tuesday I played with junk at school. First I built a house, there were no walls. Next I saw my old friends Harper and Sienna, also Manaia. We played family. I was the baby, Harper was the mom. Manaia was the Dad and Sienna was the big sister. Then I built a toy myself. I felt happy because I got to play with my old friends. I went to Junky Monkeys in the morning and we were in the hall.

It’s fun to play and I almost got a ball in!

MAYA’S VISIT

Today Maya came to school.

I was so, so happy and surprised and Monty came with my parents.

It was so nice.

So we sang Maya a song.

And Evie, Maritza, Imogen, Carmela Alyana and me danced with her.
