Newsletter Week Seven Term 3 2016

GIVE A KID A BLANKET

Thank you from Stacey, Codie and Sam!
Here is an update from Give a Kid A Blanket on how their blanket drive went this year.

They are extremely appreciative of the huge quantity of blankets the St Joseph Community have donated.

“Excited to share that our total number of blankets given out for 2016 is…….2768. This is well over double last year’s incredible effort.
We only tally how many blankets we give out, rather than is collected as unfortunately not all donated blankets are fit for human use. Those that weren’t we passed on to animal rescue organisations. Our measure is what we would give our own children and grandchildren.
The count too does not include the huge number of pyjamas, clothes,
hot water bottles, wheat bags, beanies and even a cot we gave to those in need, thanks to the efforts of all involved. A huge thanks to all donors. Special thanks to all our amazing drop off point volunteers, and to Matt who gave the project a home this year, putting off moving into his newly leased premises till we were done. Our gratitude to you all.

The project will return in 2017.”

We still have more blankets to give to them to hand out which will go down so well with this cold blast.

So a huge thanks from the ‘now warm kids’ who have benefited from the St Joe’s Families generosity.

Religious Education

Home Groups 13 & 14, from Kiwi Team, celebrated their Liturgy on Thursday. Their focus was Creation. They were joined by Seminarian Anthony and a number of parents and grandparents. You should have been there. Such reverence, beautiful singing, lovely clear voices saying the prayers and the proclaiming the readings…such a prayerful time.

Opening up global opportunities for our young people

“As your local MP, I joined my colleague, Hekia Parata at Carmel College to announce funding for new or expanded Asian language programmes at 63 schools across the country including three local schools – Carmel College, St Joseph’s in Takapuna and St Leo’s in Devonport. They’re part of a group of five North Shore Catholic schools to receive $118,742 to run more classes in Japanese, Korean and Mandarin. Gaining knowledge of these languages will open up opportunities for our young people in an increasingly globalised world. Four other local schools – Westlake Boys’ High School, Takapuna Normal Intermediate, Takapuna Primary and Milford Primary received $69,365 for more classes in Japanese, Korean and Mandarin last year under this Asian Language Learning in Schools Fund.”  Maggie Barry

Collaborative Learning Opportunities

The Ministry of Education has recently approved a North Shore Catholic Schools Community of Learners. The Principals and Deputy Principals of our schools have been working together for the past 18 months both in planning and in shared professional learning opportunities for our teachers, in preparation for

Forming a CoL (Community of Learners).  The school involved are St Joseph’s Takapuna, St Mary’s Northcote, St Leo’s Devonport, Stella Maris, Rosmini College and Carmel College.  Funding, over and above our normal funding, will be provided to employ a Lead Principal, some “across the schools” lead teacher positions and some additional in-school lead teaching positions.

Have a lovely weekend.

God bless!

Phil
