PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents / Caregivers

We hope that you’ve enjoyed a lovely holiday break with your families. We are looking forward to welcoming back the students for Term 3, starting on Monday 25 July at 8:50am.

This term we are continuing school in the Orange setting of the Covid Protection Framework (CPF) with the procedures that we put in place last term. These procedures are based on the Ministry of Education guidelines, and the health and safety needs of our students and staff.

If you need a refresher of the Orange Alert Level guidelines at St Joseph’s School, you can find them here.

We are continuing to review and adjust these guidelines to reflect the current situation, and there have been a few key changes, which are detailed below:

Beginning of the Day – Students will be able to play in the following areas between 8.15 and 8.45am or go directly to their learning space:

  • The quad
  • Area in front of  HG 15 – 18
  • Play area by the hall
  • Junior playground (Year 0 / 1 / 2)

End of Day: We are returning to our usual end-of-day-time at 2:50pm. We ask that you do not come to the Home Groups to collect your child prior to this time. If you need to pick up your child before 2:50pm, please call the office on 489 4994.

Masking up for the start of Term 3: Due to the rising case numbers and in line with the latest Ministry of Health and Education recommendations,  students from Year 3 up will be required to wear a mask when they are inside the learning space for the first 4 weeks of Term 3.

Wearing masks can reduce new cases of the virus by as much as 53%. It works alongside other measures including vaccination, good ventilation, staying home when sick, hand washing and other hygiene measures.

The children will be able to have regular mask breaks during learning time and are not required to wear them during break times when outside. We will review this mask wearing measure on Friday 19 August

We will continue with:

  • Parents can enter the property at drop-off and pick up.
  • Parents are asked to stay out of the learning spaces.
  • Parents wear masks on site.
  • To reduce congestion, parents are asked to stay off porches in front of the learning areas.
  • There will be no school wide gatherings inside.

Thank you for supporting the procedures we have in place to protect our students and staff which enable us to minimise learning disruptions due to illness.

The following topics will be covered in this weeks Principal Message:

  • Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews
  • BOT Upcoming Elections
  • Term 3 Sports Registrations
  • Sacramental Programme

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at principal@sj.school.nz

Kind regards

Laura Bateman & Natasha Luxford

PARENT/STUDENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews: Years 2 – 6 (Term 3, Weeks 2-4)

At the start of the term, you will be contacted by your child’s teacher to arrange a time to meet and discuss the Mid-Year Report. They will share your child’s progress with you and their next learning steps. It is important that all parents attend these meetings with their child.

These meetings will be held in well ventilated learning spaces. Parents/children will sit distanced from the teacher. There will only be one family in the learning space at a time. We ask that masks are worn and sanitiser will be available on entry to the learning space.

Year 0/1 Students

Parents are invited in to meet their child’s teacher to discuss the School Entry Assessment and again when the child’s 6 Year Net is completed. The timings of these meetings are determined by the start date of the student.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTION

Reminder: School Board trustee nominations are now open.

Plus, an invitation to chat to our current School Board members about what it means to be a St. Joseph’s School Takapuna Board Trustee:

Friday, July 29th from 7.30 – 9:00am

Nominations are now open for five parent elected positions on our School Board. St. Joseph’s School Takapuna would love to ensure that our Board is representative of our community. We encourage you to consider putting yourself (or someone you know) forward by Wednesday 3, August.

There are no formal qualifications required for School Board members. Ideally the Board should be comprised of people who can work well in a team, possessing good communication skills. Other skills that would be beneficial include things such as an understanding of the education sector; financial experience; people management; or knowledge, experience and understanding of particular communities within our school.

Training and development opportunities will be available to all Board members through the New Zealand School Trustees Association (NZSTA).

To find out more or to make a nomination, visit https://myschoolelection.nz/mynomination

Please note that you should have received an email directly from My School Election regarding the election process. The email requested you check your contact details and explained the nomination process. If you haven’t seen this email in your inbox, we recommend checking your spam/junkmail folder. If you definitely haven’t received it, please advise the Returning Officer for the election, Bernardine Vester via email at returningofficer@myschoolelection.nz We also ask that you cc secretary@sj.school.nz so that we can ensure all files are up to date.

Also a reminder… as ballots will eventually be sent via post from MySchool Election, please ensure you’ve sent any change-of-address details to secretary@sj.school.nz if you’ve moved recently.

If you are considering putting yourself forward for nomination, we also invite you to come and chat to some of our current School Board Trustees this Friday 29, July between 7.30 – 9:00am at the Mary Thomas Outdoor Learning Centre on the quad. A coffee cart will be on-site and our current Board members will be happy to chat with you about their experience on our Board.
